Deleting Files and Programs

To Delete some text or an object in a document

Select the text or item (highlight it by dragging if you are in word processing or click on the cell if a spreadsheet) Now you can either:1) press your delete key or 2) begin typing the replacement text or information.

To Delete an individual file

Using Explorer (or the Find tool), go to the folder where the file is saved. Right click on the file you wish to delete and choose delete from the menu. You will get a message asking you if you are sure that you want to send this file to the recycle bin.

To Delete a Program from your system

There are several methods to uninstall (or delete) a program that you don’t use anymore. If you don’t have any idea what the program is or does, you probably shouldn’t delete it!

Method 1

Using the Start button, choose Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs. If the program you wish to delete is listed in the box-click on it and then choose the Add/Remove Button.

Method 2

If the Program is not listed in the box detailed in Method 1, look under Start/Programs for a choice to Uninstall. Select this and follow the instructions. If there is no icon labeled Remove or Uninstall, try searching the help for the program under uninstall or remove for instructions.

Method 3

Manually uninstall the program by deleting its file in Windows Explorer.

Using any of these methods you may get messages saying that a shared file is present that the the system doesn’t think is being used by any other programs. If you are not sure, I recommend a cautious approach (don’t delete the file, or if you do-write down the name and don’t empty your recycle bin until you verify that all of your other programs work fine!)

The deletion process may remove the programs but leave the shortcut icons on your Start/Programs menu. To get rid of these icons, Right click the start button and select Open. Double Click the Programs Folder (and any other folders) until you see the shortcut icon for the program you have just deleted. Right click this icon and select delete.
